Winter Haven, Florida
LEGOLAND® Florida is a dynamic 145 acre theme park comprised of significant historic features. Located on the original site of Cypress Gardens (Florida’s first commercial tourist theme park) LEGOLAND ®FLORIDA’s primary design consideration incorporated the preservation of the historic aspects of the original park.
Guests at LEGOLAND®FLORIDA experience comfort that only mature trees can bring to a new and unique entertainment environment. The mature oak canopy immediately provides shade relief as guests arrive from the parking lot and the entry plaza. Relocated oak trees ranged in size from 38,000 to 78,000 pounds.
The design approach entailed re-using and re-theming as many of the existing structures from Cypress Gardens as possible. Preserving and maintaining the site’s natural character and beauty, while remaining cognizant of the tight construction budget and schedule constraints, led to a successful delivery of this design build project. The reuse of existing infrastructure and utilities contributed to the renovation of 25 wood framed buildings, along with saving two years of the construction schedule.
Recycling existing materials, reusing many of the Cypress Gardens’ assets, the intimate scale of the buildings, the extensive canopy of mature trees and landscape, along with the creative and unusual use of LEGO models gives LEGOLAND® Florida a magical quality unlike any other theme park.
